We are running Kunena 3.06 on our existing site and are in the process of migrating to a new ISP and updating PHP from 5.6 to 7.4 and Joomla from 3.8.7 to 3.9.20. We have moved the Joomla database to the new test site, but are having trouble installing the latest version of Kunena.

We had 'Installation Failed' messages with no explanation, so reverted to a saved installation file for Kunena version 5.0.4.1. That installation completed without errors, but get thi message on the frontend:

Kunena Internal Error: Please enable Kunena Debug Mode and report problem in the www.kunena.org forum.

When we go to the backend and try to enable the Kunena Debug Mode (set to 'yes', then Save), we get the same message on the frontend. When we go back to the backend, we find that the Kunena Debug Mode says 'No' again. The Kunena Debug Mode cannot be set.

If we delete all of the database files on the new site and move a copy of the database from the current site, can we then install the latest version of Kunena and expect it to work - or are there other steps that need to be taken?

I'm not sure if an upgrade from K3.0 to 5.1 works. Therefore, try it with an intermediate step via K4.0.12.
This step should adjust the tables for the further migration. But you can do it only on the old page, because K4.0.12 is not installable on Joomla 3.9 as well not with php 7.4.

1. To be sure that nothing to go adrift, create previously a database backup of all Kunena tables.
2. Then upgrade as intermedia step to Kunena 4.0.12 github.com/Kunena/Kunena-Forum/releases/tag/4.0.12
3. Now upgrade your Joomla and php versions (or import this tables to your new Joomla 3.9 test page)
4. Then upgrade Kunena to the current version
