Bots or real humans? was created by KZQ
My site sees 10 registrations from spammers or bots for every real new member. I use a Captua challenge but somehow I need a more robust registration process. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

If you allow user register, a better captcha will not help. Because of the Corona crisis, many human users have time to spread spam posts. A possibility would be the option "Moderate New Users = 1" (tab Security). Then must the first post of new users approved by a moderator. Only if the first post is approved, will the next posts automatically published.

Important! Always create a backup before you make any changes to your website!

Thanks Rich,
I've already set the user moderation to 2 so they can't actually post. But they can still register and activate.
I've signed up at Project Honey Pot and given that information to "Admin Tools". I'll be looking to see if the Honey Pot can slow them down.

Thank you
Bill

Hi Bill,
you could look at ochSimpleFirewall . A normal firewall tries to stop spammers while spamming, ochSimpleFirewall stops spammers / abusers / mallware / etc. who are known to spam / abuse and been caught by others (stopforumspam, cleantalk, etc.)
If you would like to test to see if it works for your use case, please let me know.
For me it does miracles, not only on kunena, but also on contact form etc.

I use R Antispam (Rantmil) and its saves me lot of time in stopping BOT registrations. Majority of mine are BOTS using two capital letters in the user name.

I ended up just requiring all new users to be approved by an Admin. I also see 20 or so registrations per day where the user name ends in two upper case letters. They're easy to delete. The rest require a closer review but I've gotten pretty good at anticipating spamsters.
