Regarding Captcha, you will have to do something.
My web hosting provider is threatening to shut down my forum if better security is not provided.
It is full of fake mail that my provider doesn't like and they have shut down my mail that notifies users of new posts etc.

This is all I have to choose from and nothing works or is good enough

Registration is done by joomla. In Joomla 5 you can install this plugin and configure it with the right keys.
As far as I can see you forum is not accessible to the public so I wonder where the huge amount of emails is coming from.
A good hoster normally allows at least 500 - 1000 emails per day.

I don't understand the connection. If a spammer or spambot registers, it must have a valid email, at least for a short time, otherwise the registration cannot be completed.
But this has nothing to do with subscription emails, as spammers don't usually subscribe to categories or topics, unless you use the forced subscription plugin Autosubscription for Kunena.
A Chaptcha can only help to the extent that fewer spambots register, but it does not prevent real spam users from registering. For Kunena herself, a captcha only makes sense if you grant the public the right to write.
Spam users or spambots can post spam, but cannot send mails from Kunena. So it can only be subscription mails from categories or topics that your users have subscribed to.
You can prevent too many mails from being sent at the same time by setting the value for E-mail to Multiple Recipients in the configuration under Subscriptions to a value higher than 0.
However, a valid e-mail address must then also be entered in the Visible E-mail Recipient field. An email is then sent to multiple recipients. The higher the value, the fewer emails need to be sent.

Important! Always create a backup before you make any changes to your website!

@rich: exactly what I was thinking. With a forum access to only registered users and having only 232 users it is in my opinion impossible to reach email limits.
@Hifi2you: are you sure your site isn't hacked?

No, I'm not sure of anything at all.
I got this email from Simply, which is my provider. =

Blocking of outgoing mail from [email protected]!
Hello

We have just set up an outgoing block on [email protected] from our smtp.simply.com SMTP server.

The reason is that we have registered misuse of the email account.

Possible reasons for the blockage are:

- Our SMTP server is used for mass sending, which is not allowed.

- Mails are sent through the SMTP server from sender addresses that do not belong to your domain.

- The password to the e-mail account has been compromised (perhaps due to a virus on your computer or because you have, at some point, been connected to a compromised internet connection) and thus the e-mail account is being misused by others to send spam.

To prevent further abuse, we have disabled outgoing mail on the mail account.

You can reactivate the mail account through our Mail administration in our Control Panel, by changing the password for the mail account.

If you think the reason is that your mail account has been compromised, you should scan all computers for malware and viruses.

We apologize for the inconvenience this causes.

I would do as they say: scan your computer and change your email password.

Have you ever considered using another free plug-in  OSpam-a-not? You can set a number of seconds (i.e. 3) it should take as a minimum to respond to a form.

I have had a lot of spambots and after starting this plug-in a year ago I never had one again.
