I'd like to create my types of topics with icons, but I was not able to find any such instruction in the documentation or board archives. Not surprising, as this probably isn't something everyone wants to do.

I think that's for version 3 and I'm using version 4. The displayed options are not in the current version.

that is new on K4.x

You need to copy the dir media\kunena\topic_icons\default, and edit the params to your own needs. Then add the setting on the category to load the right topic icons.

I duplicated the default folder and gave it a new name. I edited the XML file to reflect that name, and added the new topic icon. I also added the new topic icon into the folder with the other images. A little calendar icon should show up, but still no joy.

you have 2x id=3

So you need to remove 1, then do also clean cache.

else do right click on a icon, and see if the new image dir is loaded
