Question PHP Fatal error: Cannot access empty property in /libraries/joomla/registry/registry.php on line 194

I am very unsure if this is the right place to ask a question as mine, and I am really unsure if I can ask a questian at all, since I obviously have totally overlooked and failed to update my kunena forum.

I am a very non-expert user, but I manage to maintain a hobby website with a forum, - it has been running fine untill now, - no problems at all, - and I never thought about having to update the forum.

Now I am having some serious troubles with the Kunena forum at the site, and looking for help here I then find that I should have updated my version long ago, and maybe cannot even get any support ???

I will try to explain my situation, and hoping that you will either move my question to where it should be, hopefully help explain whats going on, - and also - obviously guide me with regards to updating .

I am worried about updating and then loosing all posts in our forum, that would be a disaster really.

But the problem that is the reason that I have come here today, is that from today (only) all threads at the forum which exceeds one page comes up with a message saying fatal error.

I have also put Joomla support on it, they dont seem to know whats going on either, so in the meantime I thought I might ask you people here, and maybe you can help me somehow ..
Not so sure though, feel kind of quilty not having updated and all that ...

I advise you to enable debug mode in Joomla and Kunena configuration panel .

By upgrading Kunena the thing you can lose is customied templates or hack, i advise you to take a look to akeeba backup to learn how you can backup your site and restore it. Then, you will able to upgrade Kunena to 1.7.1

I can see that this 500 error is a difficult one to figure out, - and I guess I need someone professional to look into it, - since messing around with things that may or may not cause something else to happen, is really not so nice, and I dont feel confident in doing that.

But in short, do you think theres is a chance that this 'problem' has to do with not having upgraded ??

Or should I be able to run the forum even its an old version ?

I have a tiny suspicion also that it could be a third party extension which I am using - ExtendedReg - it has caused some problems before.
