I just installed a fresh copy Joomla 1.7 on a brand new host account and have only installed Kunena 1.7.1. Literally no edits, mods, changes, tweaks, setting adjustment, etc... nothing. When I am logged into the backend, I get an error when I go to Components, Kunena Forum, then click on Configuration. The error shows:

500 Internal Server Error
Fatal Error was detected!

Fatal Error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 491520 bytes) in modules/mod_menu/tmpl/default_enabled.php on line 325

The error was detected in the Menu Module.

Go back

When I click on the Forum link on the front end, I get this error:

500 Internal Server Error
Fatal Error was detected!

Fatal Error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 122880 bytes) in modules/mod_banners/tmpl/default.php on line 92

The error was detected in the Banners Module.

I have uninstalled joomla and kunena about 4 times now and get the same errors every time. All of the other links work (category manager, user manager, etc..) any ideas?

Can we see your Kunena configuration report, please? I tested this, myself, on an empty "vanilla-flavoured" website and I haven't seen the kinds of problems like the ones you've described. It's possible that your installation was not successful. Did you get any error messages during the installation procedure? Try uninistalling and then re-installing Kunena again.

Please see K 1.6 & K 1.7 Installation Guide for further detailed advice.

You ran out of memory. Usually Kunena runs in 16M of memory, but not always -- depending on how many Apache, PHP and Joomla plugins have been installed.

To run Joomla site you generally need 32-64MB of PHP memory.
