Question Use of Sticky - is it a "bug" or a "feature"

Our site defaults to the "Recent Topics" option when our users enter the forum. This is almost always the logical way our users want to see things. I tried using a "sticky" button for the first time, and I see that it has no effect on the "Recent Items" listing. It only sticks to the top when you list everything within a category. I think that sticky should be sticky, even if you're doing a recent items list, but I'll defer to the developers of Kunena if this is the way it's designed.

Thanks for your question. Let me try to explain how the "sticky" bit works and how "Recent Topics" works.

The Recent Topics view shows the most recently updated topics, in descending chronological sequence. You can limit the size of this by changing the values in the pull-downs at the top of the page. When you think about it, most people (and I'm one of them) want to see the most recently updated topics irrespective of whether the topic is a "featured" topic (i.e. a "sticky" one) or not. At least, that's how the Kunena designers see it. In this sense, therefore, there is no "bug" here. Whatever is the most recently updated topic - whether it was featured/sticky or not - will appear at the top of the display on the Recent Topics page.

On the other hand, when you are browsing the topics in the Index, it makes a lot of sense to feature some important ones at the top of the list. The idea of a "sticky" topic is quite useful in the context of looking at an index or "table of contents".

Some people may have a different idea and would like to see certain topics featured on the Recent Topics page. That's fair enough if people want it that way, I suppose. It's only my opinion, and others can disagree with me if they like, that sticky in the context of recent topics is over-complicated or does not add value. It's certainly possible to change the current approach but whether this should be included as a standard feature of Kunena, that's a different question.

Thanks. I can see that this is really a concept where reasonable people might disagree.

If we would show sticky messages in Recent topics, the feature would be totally useless in Kunena.org (there are a few pages of sticky topics). It's also performance issue as having more complicated query will slow down the site.
