Question A Question for the Kunena Community!
It’s a community within the much larger Joomla community. We are tightly connected with Joomla, are grateful to have various Joomla leadership members join in and help us over the short history of Kunena since its official launch in January 2009.
We welcome contributions that take Kunena forward and 1.6 is a great success story for a New community to come together. Various developers from around the world have come together for months to make Kunena something new, something special amongst its peers out there.
What phpBB did before Open Source CMS platforms such as Joomla or Drupal have become mainstream, is what we intend to do with Kunena - and beyond that.
We won’t always have the most flashy feature list but we have a community that comes together to lead the way - in a very small sense just like the early days of other communities. Joomla is clearly what we model after - even if we do it in tiny steps.
We realize that we are not perfect but we are learning from each other every day.
Kunena means true Open Source. No hidden costs or a vehicle to sell you other stuff. It’s also not a single man show that looks promising just to die after its short life.
Many people have donated a fair amount of their time into this project and we are grateful for every help we can get. It is that community that we want to encourage and nurture.
Kunena 1.6 is about to go stable, 1.7 is in its planning phase and several exciting new capabilities are targeted. The next 12 months will bring never seen before features, functionality and scalability.
Finally to the question at hand:
To reflect our core focus and intend is www.kunena.com the appropriate domain name for Kunena or should it really be www.kunena.org ?
Vote and tell us what you think! (This is actually setup as a poll. You can opt to silently participate and simply hit the vote button - or do that and commment on it - your choice)

Kunena.com
The "com" ist mostly known as "company", but couldn't it be interpreted as "community"?
So the kunena.community with it's mods and mostly helpless users is the best I've ever known! Thanks to the component and thanks to the work, which developers and supporters are giving every single day. Continue this!
Even today all www.kunena.com URL also resolve on the .org domain as a permanent forward.
For example: www.kunena.org/forum/latest will forward to www.kunena.com/forum/latest
So the question really is whether to flip that behavior. All URLs in the world wide web would still work, but simply forward to the .org domain - if we where to change that.

Great points you are making.
However I don't feel that community means without leadership, nor do I believe that all members will stay forever. There are many great examples of Open Source communities that are lead by a few individuals. Ultimately if the community does not like their leadership, they will leave or fork the entire project. Nobody and nothing can prevent that.
Unfortunately there is always going to be a fair amount of politics and personality clashes no matter what we do.
I believe that Joomla has matured to a great community - even if some members, contributors and founders have left and are negative about where it stands. The same is true about any open source project out there.
On being democratic: Not every single decision is or will be up for voting - that's what is killing projects as well. Death by a thousand cuts - vote until there is only gray and noise left.
If you are here, you are doing so because you see at least some benefit of being part of this community or project. For me the people that have committed most of their time and in some cases money should have the final say on many issues - but does that have to mean this cannot be seen as a community?
And maybe you are entirely right and I should just shut up and keep doing what we have been doing in the past 18+ months.

To Randal's point, there are a number of people in the Joomla public that think "community" means there's no leadership. Without leadership there's no vision or roadmap for the community to follow. Those people would probably try and make a case for the community being the leadership and things like the vision being defined by the community. But what you really get with that process is the same as when a group of people try to design something—"a camel is a horse designed by committee."
BTW... Johan was wrong.

Christian have best examples like: King David or his son Salomon. But Salomon was the best leader on the world EVER that for the end make the worst mistake that he ever can do. He lost his root in God and think he can do it better.
When open source leader lost his real intention to be a SERVANT of community like Salomon was servant of God, than community start to leave and we have split. Salomon was forsaken by God because he think he can do something smarter than God told him he need to be done. He forgot that we he was young he ask God for help. So real source of his power and wisdom was God and not he himself. This of glory without happy end.
But really good example is Salomon's father David. Even when he make a biggest mistake in his leadership and also as a person. Kill one of his servant because he want his wife. Even than he regret and atonement as he can.
From community leadership we want only this: HEAR WHEN WE CALL FOR _IMPORTANT_ CHANGE. And don't kill our own servant. But we respect your rights to make most of decision because most of all appreciate what you do and we like effects! So by join community we give you part of our trust in you.
PS: OH! This is obvious that for now Kunena team is not leadership but also development team that not only do a politics but TRULY WORK. So this is not like in real leadership when politics only TALK. This gives you automatically rights to decide. Not like OSM (or I'm wrong?)
PS2.
I HOPE SOOOOOOOOOOOOO!severdia wrote: BTW... Johan was wrong.
I think domain name is something that image shapes from within the content. So the name is not so relevant. Both options sound good to me. That option was missing and therefore I coudn´t votefxstein wrote: Finally to the question at hand:
