They appear pretty much the same? Does someone who has used both have a preference????? Does one do something that the other doesn't???

The short answer is that users are free to choose one forum component instead of another forum component. Different forum components provide different features; some of these features (or the lack of them) will decide in favour of selecting one forum component over another for each user's website. It largely boils down to a question of preference, comfortableness and confidence.

We've had similar discussions in the past about whether "Brand A" software is better than "Brand B" and we need to exercise great care in using this website to discuss or assert the advantages or disadvantages of one component over another. For that reason the moderation team will be closely monitoring this particular discussion to ensure both Kunena and Agora are not misrepresented by the different subjective views that users may have and the moderators may have to intervene if necessary. We're happy to allow this discussion to continue as long as users are aware of these concerns and respect our decisions on the matter.

If users wish to make their own assessment of the relative benefits between different forum components then they should test different software on own sites before choosing which software works best for their particular circumstances.

We want to make it abundantly clear that we respect the work of other developers. While it may be reasonable to compare one product with another, or describing the good and not-so-good features of one or another is also acceptable, we have to draw the line at some point.

Agora is quite good, I installed it on a website of mine. However, personally I don't think it's as user-friendly as Kunena. Also, I don't like any other templates that you can download for it. Kunena have definitely made things a whole lot better by including a poll, so when 1.6 comes out, I don't think opting for Agora will actually mean you're getting any extra goodies that Kunena don't offer you.

One thing I like about Agora is the icons and some of the styling of the default template. I know K1.6 default template has been overhauled, optimised and generally improved (and there is a template system now to make it easier to install custom templates) but i still think the default template's look can be improved to 'look' newer/prettier/better.

Apart from that once K1.6 is out, the advantages of agora will be few if any (especially once kunena can take advantage of the defaul J1.6 ACL). Also, kunena has progressed on the Forum Converter plugins/scripts and so the advantage that agora had of having converters available will reduced as well i believe.

Also the Kunena team is very active and helpful, not sure how the jVitals team is on support either.

still wish that i can write my forum signature through a jomsocial plugin and do it from my jomsocial profile :(

I did try Agora, and I did actually like its graphics/layout (many good templates out there), but unfortunately a big malfunction in moderators management (moderators being sometimes unable to edit other people's posts) pushed me to quickly look for another solution.
As I was keeping my eye on Kunena's ongoing in that period, I finally and happily landed here.

Kunena is really user-friendly and, above all, it works! :D
