This is not a hack I believe Kunena.com is using, but rather a Joomla plugin that bridges Joomla logins and synchronizes them with MediaWiki and MediaWiki to Joomla.

Before installing this plugin, or any plugin for the matter that involves a bridge, I would backup your current database. There are many extensions that can do this, but I will let you go look for yourself in the Joomla Extensions Directory.

Remember nothing is guaranteed to work correctly, so make sure you do the proper research and ask questions about the joomla extension you choose.
