Hi,

I'm looking at Kunena's configuration options under 'Private messaging component' and I see a number of options including CB, Jomsocial and others.

I am assuming that I must install other software to get private chat right?

Thank you :)

Yes.

I know that two of these options work but I have no knowledge about the others. For example, I don't know where you obtain the "private messaging" component referred to by the Community Builder option. The two PM components that co-operate with Kunena: uddeIM (from www.slabihoud.de ) and JomSocial (from www.jomsocial.com ) which is used here at www.kunena.com . There may be others - some of the options may be relics from when Kunena was Fireboard - I don't know.

I use uddeIM (it's free) and I like it and it works well with Kunena and Community Builder. Other people prefer to use JomSocial.

Kunena has not an own PM System. You can install and additional extension for example UddeIM. In Kunena Documentation / Wiki you'll find a tutorial how to install and configure it:

Wouldn't it make a bit of sense if Kunena created it's own module or add-on that allowed users to check their PM's on the website/forum? Maybe that is too much to ask.

yes, i agree, if all other forums (all a lot older than Kunena) can have their own PM systems why is it so hard to implement one into this forum? This is one component that would make Kunena one of prestige forum boards(Joomla-based ofc).
