Question Kunena Performance FAQ

I have recently been asked about performance of Kunena. I'd like to shine some light on the current and upcoming versions in terms of performance.

First of all let me make it clear that the number of queries executed is not a very good measurement of performance. It is the type of queries and how well they are optimized. A single slow query can do more harm than 100 fast queries.

We are very well aware of past performance problems with FireBoard and plenty of improvements did already make it into the code.

While we are currently focusing on rolling out 1.0.8, we already have the performance improvements for version 1.1 working, just not yet integrated and tested. The changes to the underlying database tables are too significant to be included in the current 1.0.8 release.

On large forums we have seen a drop of up to 90% in mysql load through these changes.

It's coming in the next few weeks. And I am sure you will like the results. It will make Kunena a very fast forum software to run. Joomla native, fully integrated and fast.

A caution on comparing number of queries: If you rely on Joomla to tell you how many queries a component runs per page, you cannot use that comparison for any software that uses bridges. If you run a 3rd party forum software that requires a bridge, Joomla will not be aware of the queries run by that component and the debug output will be totally off and incomplete.
You might think you run only 12 queries for that page, while the software underneath runs 100+ queries that do not showup in your report.

You have our commitment to make Kunena a fast solution. As I said, lots more improvments are already in the funnel.

Have a great day!

Thats uncalled for in my opinion etusha. The developers are working hard already and have fixed many bugs already in the SVN.

still wish that i can write my forum signature through a jomsocial plugin and do it from my jomsocial profile :(

@fxstein

is there a limit to what kunena can handle? how big could a board go without adverse performance? could it handle 1,000,000 threads and 30,000 users? my site is nowhere near that yet (120,000 and 5,000 users) but just curious.

I guess this depends on server setup as well. My server is:

Linux VPS
15,000 MB Disk Space
70 GB Data Transfer
768 MB RAM Guaranteed
32 GB RAM Available
Full Root Access
Fully Managed Solution
2 IP addresses

PHP Built on: Linux host.website.com 2.6.18-028stab057.4-ent #1 SMP Fri Aug 1 13:37:30 MSD 2008 i686

Any advice much appreciated.
