Question Errror when trying to access Kunena Administration

Ok, on a hunch I killed off the absence reminder plugin for jomsocial :

Now the Kunena admin loads but keeping error reporting at maximum its still reporting the first four errors.

It's more than a mere coincidence that other people, too, have had problems with Kunena since they've upgaded to JomSocial 1.6! :dry: For this reason (and for none other obvious one) I am moving this topic to the JomSocial category.

As we have probably said elsewhere - it's commonsense, really, when you think about it - the developers of Kunena cannot be held responsible for, or expected to keep pace with, the independent actions of third-party components irrespective of whether earlier versions of those components integrated with the current version of Kunena. If JomSocial or any other third-party developer changes their product (and, in doing so, breaks the nexus with Kunena) they and their support structures have the obligation to advise their users that this is the case. Of course, I realise that this may not solve the problem in isolation and it may be necessary for the Kunena development team to modify Kunena, too.

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. From a purely Kunena view (which is the only one that I have any confidence with), what happens if you go back to the older version of JomSocial and what do the folks at JomSocial say about this problem?

Youre very welcome. Been a bit busy and havent progressed the issue yet with JS. Im a bit fried with all this.

This was one of a myriad problems I was having, for instance using Rockettheme Dominion on the site and was having weird styling issues throughout site. I discovered that using a third party Dark Jomsocial template called Blazin Dark was the problem (A JS 1.5 template which may or may not have caused issues before 1.6 upg but certainly isnt 1.6 suitable, the authors are however redeveloping for 1.6), when I changed the Jomsocial template to default all the formatting issue throughout the site sorted itself out.

I didnt start this post blaming Kunena I just thought it might be the most likely place to catch attention of a similar sufferer.

The problem with JS is Kinda like the Kunena templating issue, the code keeps changing and changing in the templates and every time you want to upgrade you pretty much have to throw away whatever template it took you a lot of time and effort to locate and prove, unless youre very lucky and the developer of the third party template is keeping pace and so far pickings have been scarce (I do realise the Kunena 1.5.x code in template is a hangover from fireboard and will cease to be an issue for 1.6 )

The module Absence reminder and the module PD JSthumbs are third party modules. Absence reminder I can live without really. PD JSthumbs is a commercial module I encountered a completely seperate issue with midweek and spoke to developer. Since JS 1.5 and 1.6 came along the way thumbnails are done and displayed for videos has changed and broken in PD JSthumbs and the other latest video module kicking about. The developer of PD JSthumbs is redoing the extension as we speak and promised a new release by this weekend, havent checked yet.

So on top of all this yet another module unrelated to Jomsocial seemed to be clashing with PD JSthumbs and I am losing track with what to try to report to which party as you might see, its tying my head in knots and I can well appreciate what you say.

I have 3 other sites still runing JS 1.2 I think I havenet touched yet, I had just got done with 1,5 upg when 1.6 dropped and Ive been using one site as a test bed due to past experiences with Jomsocial.

Excuse the tangents but as you can see Im not entirely sure due to all the factors specifically how much of the issue is rooted directly with Jomsocial itself.

Im a bit fed up with JS, I first made the switch because of the outdated looks and over complexity of Community Builder but the hassle ive had with the video and photo side of JS and finding scarce third party templates has been more sickening than a twisted b*****k! Dont get me wrong its good but it can be really testing sometimes.

Im looking forward to seeing if Tuiyo ever sees the light of day and very keen to see if Anahita lives up to its promise, there need to be more options for Joomla Community software!

:laugh: I sympathise with much of what you've written and I don't mind if you want to vent.

As a user, whenever there's a new release of Kunena, my first task is to test it before I upgrade a live website. Even then, my testing won't find every error, so I visit this forum next. You might appreciate my predicament (purely as a user) when I see this forum plastered with "Help me please, I can't upgrade", "After I upgraded I can't do anything", "I only see a blank page", etc., etc., etc. Such messages only rattle my confidence rather than boost it. Therefore I put my upgrade plans on hold while I work through, individually, every one of these issues in order to make sure that I don't run into the same problems as others.

But you get down to the core of it, 99.99% of reported issues have nothing to do with Kunena. The problems are caused by a combination of other Joomla extensions, peculiar constraints imposed by webhosting services, corrupted installations and - the number one bugbear of all time - "I changed something but I forget what it was now ..."

So I spend two weeks going through these problems and my involvement with my own websites suffers as a result.

Anyway, I'm pleased you have solved this problem and, again, thank you for sharing your discoveries. I am sure they will be a help to others.

I forgot to add both those plugins I mentioned predate JS 1.6 both in intended use and having been previously installed and I dont know if there are updated versions for 1.6 yet (at least for absence reminer), the absence reminder was in from JS 1.2 and the PD JSthumbs was for 1.5
