So, I know this has been marked as solved before - but for me, it's definitely not.
I am using Joomla 1.6x, and (trying to use) Kunena 1.6.4 - Tried uploading it, it goes through the process and then says something like ERROR: Another menu item has the same alias in Root. So, I go through and attempt to uninstall it through the extension manager - then I get "This language can't be uninstalled as long as it is defined as a default language."

Whatever - that's fine, I'll just try to do the ultimate uninstall - I backed up *everything*, then went through my entire site folder and deleted *anything* with the name kunena in it - and then went through my database and dropped every kunena table.

I then went back and tried to re-install Kunena. It doesn't give me the error that it's detecting a failed install anymore, so I must have cleaned it out - but boom. Still the same alias issue.

SO, what can I do from here? Anyone find a fix to this frustrating little issue?

G'day, legate, and welcome to Kunena.

This problem can be fixed. The cause of the problem often is because people did not use J! 1.6.3 when they installed K 1.6.4 and they have other Joomla issues caused by problems with earlier versions of Joomla. It is unfortunate that earlier versions of Joomla resulted in problems that resulted in corruption of the Joomla menu table.

While the Kunena installation process should not halt, as with the current behaviour in K 1.6.4, the problem can be worked around by removing from the Joomla menu tables old, outdated menu items, this is not an easy process to describe and it can lead to more serious problems if the technique is not properly executed (see How To Destroy your forum data... )

That's the answer but the solution is a tricky one to fix.

Sometimes it's actually easier to start again, with a completely fresh installation of J! 1.6.3 and K 1.6.4 and then add other things like a different site template, other Joomla extensions, and so on.

It is hoped that behaviour of the Kunena installer will be changed in a newer version (so that "you have another menu item in the root" will not be treated as a fatal error) but, in the meantime, people will have to work through the issues by using the techniques already posted or by very carefully, manually deleting records from the Joomla jos_menu table.
