Question Theme Preservation

Today I tried to go from 1.6.1 to 1.6.3 and it overwrote my theme despite me having it in a different folder. Some of the parts such as div backgrounds were not preserved and neither were link colors.

What is the best and safest method to preserve my entire theme so that future upgrades do not remove parts?

I am using a backup to go back to 1.6.1 so that I have am my original files intact.

That should not happen!

If you upgrade Kunena from K 1.6.xm to K 1.6.xn you will overwrite everything in the standard Kunena folders.

That is why we try to advise people to create their own templates. If you crate your own template you will not overwrite your template when you upgrade. However, I can empathise with people who try to create their own templates. The documentation in the Wiki that deals with customised templates is not very easy to read. This is another job that I will be trying to do. If I am lucky, I might be able to get this job done within the next month or two.

So I find the above statement "[the upgrade] overwrote my [template] despite me having it in a different folder" a little perplexing. In which "different" folder was this template? Was the template installed using the Kunena template installer? It would be good to get to the bottom of this mystery.

The recommended way to create your own template is to follow the Wiki guide:

docs.kunena.org/index.php/How_to_create_a_template_for_Kunena
or
docs.kunena.org/index.php/K_1.6_Template

Actually there have been some changes in CSS and in initialize.php which may have caused this (if you do not have all the files in your own folder).
