I faced a similar problem yesterday. In the end I could solve it by simple increase the memory_limit in my php.ini (on my Ubuntu-Linux found under /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini). The default of 16M seems to be a little bit less on nowadays systems, setting it to 24M or even more works fine for me.

I don't know if this will help you, but it's worth a try ;) .
