Is there a way to set the display of sub-categories as a tabs versus just listing them all in the display?

Not as far as I'm aware, sorry. Different templates might handle the display of sub-categories differently, but not the kunena default template.

What do you mean by displaying the subcategories as tabs? How would that look?

Well I was thinking of compressing sub-categories under Sections just as child forums compress under sub-categories.

Section header
TAB, TAB, TAB

Today we do have
Section header
Sub-Category
TAB, TAB, TAB

Ah, I see. No, that's not possible because of the category structure. However, you could certainly create a custom template for that kind of thing.
