Hi there,

I am setting up a forum to be used as a liftshare for a community event and I want to make user emails visible to all registered users (in user profiles) by default. Leaving the option for users to hide their email if they so choose.

Currently the email is visible to superadministrator but mot to registered users.

Is this possbile?

Thank you
Angad

G'day, angadsingh, welcome to Kunena and thank you for a very interesting question.

The following settings should work for you:

(1) In the backend, Forum Configuration » Users » User Related » Show E-mail = Yes
(2) In the frontend, the user profile Forum Settings » Hide E-mail = No

The first change you have already made. However, this only shows "hidden" email addresses to the superadministrator. Other registered users can see their email addresses only if they have changed their user profiles, as I have mentioned above.

I've tested this myself and it works. One thing that I am puzzled by is the setting that you have used, Forum Configuration » Plugins » Userlist » Show E-mail = Yes. When I tested this (on a K 1.6.4 test site) I was able to see the email addresses for all users - whether or not they chose to hide them - by looking at the user list. Is this your experience, too?

EDIT: It seems that you have stumbled on a defect in Kunena that will be rectified in a future release. Thank you.

So if I follow your answer correctly, for a users email to be shown I have to ask them to manually select to show the email in their forum settings menu? No default way to make it show...

Hmmm.... the users of this site are very non-tech so I want to make it as easy as possible for them to contact each other privately - ideally they just register and can post and contact each other via email without setting up profiles and without emails being posted into the forum. Do you know of a good solution?

I will investigate the user-list question Thursday when back on pc...this comes from my phone...
Thanks for your help so far!

By default, users "hide" their e-mail addresses. This is a "good" security policy. Yes, basically, you have to ask your users to change their personal preference. That's your job to sell the idea.

Private messaging solutions have been discussed ad nauseam on this website. Please search the forum for "private messaging"
