Question dates are showing wrong

When I post an announcement, the dates are showing wrong. I have used the drop-down calendar when creating the announcement. For example - when setting the date for October 28, after I save the announcement, it shows the date as October 27. I looked through the forum, read this doc but can't figure out how to set it correctly.
My site is using JomSocial. I have the default site time set to UTC. There really needs to be a way to have a JomsSocial application under the users' settings so they can set their own timezone, signature, etc. in JomSocial. However, I don't think this has anything to do with the date being a whole day off.

Any help is greatly appreciated,
Flip

G'day, Flip. I'll have a look at your site soon (in the next day or so) to see what's going on here.

I suspect, without having any firm evidence to back my suspicion, that the default site timezone (UTC ±0 hours) is only one issue. It's quite understandable that, in your situation (a website that's devoted to ham radio operators) your community has a tendency to discuss matters based around a common UTC viewpoint. While your site may use UTC as the default timezone, each user can set their own timezone accordingly whether they use JomSocial or their Kunena profile to do it. I have a feeling that Kunena shows discussions in terms of a user's timezone preference rather than the site timezone preference.

This is something I need to investigate. We'll need to look at whether the Announcements feature is doing something differently to the message posting and display features.

that sounds good. if you find something that needs to be changed, let us know.
Kunena is using the JomSocial profile. We didn't want to overwhelm the users with the different profiles.
but, to be honest - your theory doesn't explain why the dates are a whole day off, not just an hour or so. :)

thanks again,
Flip

it has something to do with timezone.. Maybe in announcements we should use UTC instead of local time, as hours do not show up anyway..

Thanks, Matias.

For your information, the site's global configuration settings show that the server's timezone is UTC +0 hours. The user's profile, the one viewing the announcement, is UTC -5 hours. That's why, when an announcement is posted at say (13 October 2010) it will be posted as if it were 2010-10-13 00:00. However, when users view the announcement, they see it posted according to their local time. In Flip's case, he would see the announcement as 2010-10-12 19:00.

Here's another example. The current announcement at kunena.com (please vote for the Editor's Pick award) shows for me as 2010-10-09. To be more specific 2010-10-09 03:07:38. 3:07 am? Is that when the message was created? You have to remember that I live UTC +10 hours, nearly a day ahead of those who live in the USA.

Perhaps the question should be a choice between displaying the announcement date/time according to the server time or according to the user's local time ... or UTC as a third choice? We need to clarify this.
