Question SEF URLs not working

If I turn on SEF URLs and Apache mod_rewrite in Joomla, then the Forum URLs generate 404s.

I have experienced the same problem on another identical site set up as well.

Having looked again, the problem is that an example URL is /forum/4-health-and-welfare, whereas it should be /forum/index/4-health-and-welfare

The /index path is not being included when SEF URLs are turned on. Turn of SEF URLs and everything works fine.

G'day, David, and welcome to Kunena.

The problem has nothing to do with Kunena and, as often as we try to explain to people that the problem has nothing to do with Kunena, people still seem to think that (somehow) we can explain how SEF problems are related to Kunena.

What surprises me is that your website uses some kind of SEF URLs but your configuration report does not indicate how you obtained SEF URLs. Whatever you are using, it's not standard Joomla on your website ... but I don't know what it is, either (possibly some special .htaccess rule? )

Here are some recommendations based on my observations of your website:

(1) Joomla SEO is more than clicking two radio buttons in the Global Configuration secion of your adminstration site. The two radio buttons also need a properly-working .htaccess file as well. The article Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) in the Wiki explains these things.

(2) You have removed the "Powered by" link at the bottom of your forum. I must assume that you have made other changes, too, to the Kunena source code and that your site does not use the original unmodified Kunena source. You are, in effect, on your own in sorting out operational problems that you might experience in the future. I suggest that you go back to using the standard, unmodified Kunena source code ... especially if you want ongoing support from this forum.

(3) You so not have a Kunena menu. That's OK; some people don't want the Kunena menu. On the other hand, most people don't have the Kunena menu because of something they've done by mistake. It's your choice if you want the Kunena menu and we respect that.

Hi & thanks for the welcome. I did get to the root of this.

I'm using the standard Joomla SEF options and have .htaccess properly configured. The issue was that the Kunena menu items had been replicated to the Main Menu and this replication was partly to blame. I deleted the Kunena menu and this sorted everything. I still don't have a perfectly formed URL but have /component/kunena/health-and-welfare however I can live with that.

As for the footer, I installed a 3rd party template that appended some weird text on the 'Power by...'. Decided that this was too ugly so took out the footer code, other than that, no other changes made.
