Have you tried with the standard Kunena template, to eliminate the possibility its an issue with your pre-Kunena 1.6 template? Looking through these posts that's THE most common issue discussed.

Plugins: System - Mootools12: Disabled | System - Mootools Upgrade: Disabled

I'm pretty sure you should have Mootools enabled as well, or at least the upgrade.

When I go to 'Kunena --> Template Manager' the selected template is 'Blue Eagle (default)'...

I enabled the MooTools upgrade but that didn't fix the problem...

OMG!!!!!
Found it..!
It's a very basic thing I managed to ignore.....
In the 'Kunena Forum --> Configuration --> Frontend' page you have the option 'Category List in Recent Topics' which gives you the ability to define the categories which will be used to populate the recent topics page...

I you choose a category with no topics (like I did..!!!!) you'll get no results on the recent topics page..!!
The default selection, which I'm using now is 'Show All Categories'!

It's that simple..!

Regards!!!

A word to the wise (and to those who are tempted to change all kinds of configuration settings without knowing how they work). Before you feel the irresistible urge to change configurtation setings, stop. Don't do it. See what happens first before you change anything. If you feel tempted to change something, change one thing at a time and see what happens.

If you change things and your forum doesn't work for you the way that it used to work, revert your settings back to their default values. K 1.6 makes it possible to do this with a single mouse-click.
