There are several possible reasons for this to happen:

Certainly, we know that menu aliases can play a part (if you have two menu items with the same alias, for example).

Other causes, too, are:

(1) legacy menu items from K 1.5
(2) menu item with no itemid
(3) the wrong itemid (this would not be generated by the Kunena component)
(4) some peculiar issues involving third-party SEF software
(5) customised .htaccess

But there isn't a definite explanation at this time as to why we seem to be seeing these issues emerging now and to eliminate the cause as something to do with K 1.6.1!

What might be happening (that's causing the redirect problem) is that users already have a menu item with the alias "forum". Along comes Kunena and it tries to create another menu item with the alias "forum". So you end up with two menu items, each of them with the same alias. That's when the website gets confused and that's where you can get the redirect loop issue.

What you need to do is check all the alias names for all the menu items and give them unique names. Then you need to make sure that you have properly implemented Joomla Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) .

Changing the alias fixed my problem. I think I tried another forum before Kunena which must have used the same alias. I had uninstalled it but there must have been a remnant.
