Hello,

You need to increase your memory_limit in your php.ini file if you have access to it

I don't provide support by PM, because this can be useful for someone else.

I am also having the same issue. I also upped the memory to 64MB, so I doubt if that is the issue.

Fatal Error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 19456 bytes) in libraries/joomla/application/module/helper.php on line 291
The error was detected in the Libraries.

Any ideas appreciated.

Memory errors are tricky ones to isolate and diagnose.

In my own case (where my webhosting company allows me a maximum 32Mb - something that I have no leeway with) I recently had to tackle an issue where one of my sites gave me these memory errors. It turned out that the problem was caused by loading that one-too-many modules on a page. When these things come along, you have to make some decisions. Which is more important to you: Kunena or all the other things that your website may have?

In my case, the problem was caused by a visitor traffic counter. I can live without that. Kunena is, for me, more important than displaying how many people visit my site. Yes, it's important to know how many people visit my site(s) but it's not important enough to try to show that information if it leads to the whole site crashing because I don't have enough PHP memory to do everything.

So, in 99 times out of 100, try a simple experiment:

(1) Build a basic website, from scratch, with Joomla.
(2) Install Kunena.
(3) Do not install anything else.
(4) See if you get these "out of memory errors". If you do, get these errors, with this bare-bones website then perhaps Kunena is not right for you. If you don't then look at what other things hog memory and don't use them ... unless they're more important to have than having a web-based discussion forum based on Kunena.

To doelhammond: we can't answer these kinds of questions in specific terms if we don't know anything about your website. If you'd like us to help you, I suggest that you read the posting guidelines printed at the top of this page and, in particular, look at What information should I include when I ask for help (including how to post my configuration report)? . Just because you have a "Allowed memory size ... exhausted" message (like iamrichard also had) does not mean that you have the same problem that was referred to in the subject of this topic or in the opening message in this topic. In fact, the error messages are different and (as you correctly concluded) the remedy suggest by xillibit was not appropriate in your case.

Thanks for the input. I went back to the site today to try to troubleshoot and lo and behold it works. I would try to find out why, but need to press on.

PS I didn't do anything - no reset, reboot or anything. It just started working,
