G'day, mabs2685, and welcome to
Kunena.
The issue only arises when using the
Index view of categories and topics.
I understand the issue that you seem to be having but it's not easy to give a simple answer to this question. If I were to say that there isn't a major problem with this limitation you would probably disagree. I need to explain.
Let us suppose, for example that you had 26 sub-category levels (I realise this is an extreme example, that probably wouldn't happen in real life, but I would ask you to play along with me for a little while):
Category A
.../sub-category B
.../.../sub-category C
.../.../..../sub-category D
.
.
.
.../.../.../.../sub-category Z
And let us suppose that someone posts a new message in sub-category Z.
You want the
NEW
indicator to show on Category A, right? So, what happens
next? Someone sees the "new" indicator on Category A but they won't find the new post when they open the category. But they will find a sub-category B. Perhaps, then we need to show the
NEW
indicator against the link to sub-category B? OK, so we e go to sub-category B but there's still no new message but now we see a
NEW
indicator appear on sub-category C, perhaps? And, eventually, after 26 mouse-clicks, you finally arrive at sub-category Z where you see the new message. :pinch:
As I said, an extreme example and I'm sure you and everyone else reading this will say, that will never happen. Therefore we have to ask ourselves, what is not an extreme case? If 26 levels is too many, is 25 levels too many? Or 24, 23, 22 ... or 5? At some point we have to agree what is not too many levels, too many many hoops you need to put your users through, to get where new messages have been posted.
In my opinion, the presence of sub-categories serves one important purpose on the Index page: it shows your uses where they
might find information. However I, and most forum users that I have daily contact with, don't use the
Index page very often to find the latest messages posted on the forum. You may choose to disagree with me (and I'll respect your right to do that) but it is my opinion that most people get more benefit from using either the
Recent Topics or
My Topics tabs to go directly to the latest messages.
One of the things that you'll also notice about the Index view is that the
NEW
indicator is not clickable whereas on the
Recent Topics or
My Topics views it
is clickable. This is the solution. When the
NEW
indicator becomes a direct link to the new message.
In conclusion, although the issue that you've reported
could be categorised as a
technical defect of K 1.6.x, I would suggess that it's not a major drama because of the way that most people use the forum. If most people are primarily interested seeking the latest messages, they won't use the
Index page; they'll use the
Recent Topics or
My Topics tabs. But that's just my opinion.
Known problem; no
technical solution at this stage. Sorry.
