I have searched and I can't find how to create different icons for each category. Is this possible? So sorry if this has been asked but I did search.

Good question, snilly.

I've written about this a few time and we really do need to write a Wiki article to show people how it's done (but that's just a matter of finding the time to write it up). Here is what I wrote on the subject for K 1.5: Options for Customizing Subforums?

What I would like to know is what changes, if there are any, need to be made to adapt the procedure to K 1.6. If you could (please) let me know if the procedure that I wrote before is still the same in K 1.6 that would be great. If there are any changes needed (like the location of the files) could we update that information in this topic?

The general approach is still the same, I believe. You need three images: one for when users are not logged-in, one for when they are logged-in and there are new messages posted that the user hasn't yet seen, and a third image for logged-in users who have read all the messages in the category.

How those image files need to be named and where they should be stored, that's something I haven't yet looked into.
