i dont think that the emoticons work when you have text immediately preceeded it:sick:

I believe they never have. You need to have a whitespace before and after for the bbcode engine to recognize them.

I had to answer this as well. Emoticons used to work like this, but in some languages emoticons -- if allowed inside words -- will break real words. For example in Finnish it's common to write things like this:

YLE:stä, which would look like YLE tä.

In Sweden you have AB (which means public company) and saying something like this:

I bought some ice cream from supermarket (tasty one made by Igman AB), would look like this: Igman A

So smileys need to be separated from words, just to fix more serious bugs.. For example I hate Skype (=horrible), which gives you a mushroom..
