What's more, I was using K 1.5.7, I deleted everything - all the files and the directories - default_gray, default_green and default_red and then I installed the new version. Those old templates were copied back as part of the installation procedure. Therefore I don't understand the what kade119 wrote (which I quoted above).
Unless you have deleted these directories yourself, if you go to Kunena Configuration » Frontend » Template you will see a pull-down list of templates.

I'm sorry, I was distracted by several other discussions that dealt similarly with whether there was only one or whether there were several templates installed (see
There is only one endorsed and supported Kunena template ... default_ex
which took many hours of work to establish what the facts were).
I was mainly trying to establish the facts, to make sure that you were familiar with Read this if you are template designer before, perhaps, someone might be in a good position to suggest the clues to you.
These two pieces of information are vital to the question and they are most definitely on-topic, I assure you. In fact, I have noticed a considerable falling-off in interest by the regular, experienced template designers who are either waiting for, or putting their efforts into, the next major release of Kunena. In short, any changes you make now may only be useful for the next few weeks. ?This may explain why you have not received much interest in your idea.
Returning to your original question, you will need to modify two files:
../components/com_kunena/templates/default/fb_layout.php (remove, or comment out, the code that generates the search box); and
../components/com_kunena/templates/default/plugins/profilebox/profilebox.php (insert the code that you took from the above file).
