Hello,

In your profile, when you have uploaded your avatar you haven't seen the message : "failed" or something else?

So, check the permissions of the directory and files in : joomla\images\fbfiles\avatars

I don't provide support by PM, because this can be useful for someone else.

What kunena version do you using ?

You need to check too, that the images in the directory are on 777.

I am encountering almost the same problem but along a different line.
Instead of the avatars from a PC file not working, the avatars from the gallery are the ones not working.
I've changed the avatars in the directory to a few homemade ones and none of them are loading through the selection screen shown to the user.
They are all 48 x 48 pixels or less in dimension.
They are all under 3 kb size.
They are all gif files.
I've also tried uploading an original avatar from the fbfiles pack but get the same results. Which leads me to think of a bug somewhere.

However when the user loads his/her own avatar from a PC file, it works.

So far, I've tried the following steps as mentioned in this thread; i.e., changed directory and file permissions to 777 but still get a similar image as above but with a "?" question mark instead of an "X" mark.

Kindly help

Where do you have seen "operation not permitted" ? What do you use to change the permissions ?
