Question Forum too wide in IE8

I haven't used IE8 for a couple of weeks now - what a blessed relief! - but there may be another solution to the problem: "compatibility view". See the following two screenshots of this discussion as viewed in Internet Explorer 8:

compatibility view works. But i having the same problem on kunena.com, when a picture is to wide. i used always the compatibility view mode on every kunena websites.

Compatibility view would solve the problem only for me, not for my guests. I can't tell everyone to use compatibility view just to conceal an error in IE8. A website should look good in all browsers. Sticking my head in the sand will not make all problems go away, it just covers the problem.

P.s. you guys do a great job on Kunena but if you look at your own forum with compatibility view switched on....how do you find errors in the layout? Our guests sure cant find Compatibility view, or know this will solve the problem, they will just leave a website.

Although this is off-topic to the original topic, I've read a dozen, so-called "reputable" reviews about IE8 and, basically, they conclude that, while Microsoft have made some gains with their new product, IE8 is no more more attractive (for most "ordinary" users) than alternatives like Safari, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. It's only because most Windows XP and Vista users have had IE8 forced on them in the past couple of months that IE8 enjoys its current share of the market. If users weren't press-ganged into using IE8 they would be blissfully ignorant of what it does.

Let's look at the history. Microsoft has, for years, stumbled along trying to impose their standards on the World Wide Web (but, thankfully, they've failed). For years I stuck to "good ol' IE" because it was the most-used browser. But, in recent times, Microsoft's hold on market share has been eroded. People are tired of Microsoft products turning into leviathan-sized CPU-hoggers offering little in the way of new innovation or new functionality - "bloat-ware", I call it.

IE8's big attraction seems to be "porn mode" (in-private browsing), web slices and accelerators (be still, my pounding heart!) and "proper" CSS support. But instead of making their product leaner and meaner, IE8 chugs away merely to tell you that your state-of-the-art Joomla website was "designed for older browsers". Pardon my obvious cynicism but I don't need the guys at Redmond, Washington telling me that the hard work I put into my websites is "outdated".

What is becoming more "normal" these days is for website designers to place a notice on their site's home page informing those visitors who use IE8 to switch to "compatibility view".

You may disagree, of course, and that makes for a lively debate, but I don't think we should "toe the party line" simply because Microsoft think they have an unfettered right to dictate the terms. I think a little healthy rebellion in the Internet would do a lot to send the message home that we're intelligent people, too.

People won't abandon websites because they're ignorant about what "compatability view" does, or they can't find the button. That's "Scaremongering 101" and Microsoft is probably hoping to use such tactics to intimidate web developers around the world. I refuse to be intimidated in that fashion. If I lose visitors at my website it's not because my site design is lousy (or "outdated" to paraphrase in IE8 terms). That's nonsense.

To remove ambiguity: Nobody of the Kunena Team has told, that he looks at Kunena Forum only with compatibility switched on and the Kunena Team did not recommend to switch to compatibility view. Why do you think so, because Sozzled told this? He is a user like you.

The compatibility view switches Internet Explorer 8 to IE 7 and this is no progress but regression.

I will talk with Matias, why the hack was not integrated, perhaps because this hack is not the best solution, I don't know why. It is (imho sure) the IE expanding box problem.

But like 810 wrote, you are using a special version and the designers of it are working on a solution

By no means I intended to offend either of you! Just lets call it a small misunderstanding in language on my side.

I do think Kunena is great! But IE8 isn't perfect. We can ignore the flaws in IE8 or work around them. I'm a complete noob in programming so I rely on volunteers like yourself.

For myself, I just want to show a good looking website to the majority of my guests. 76% of my guests use IE, I don't want to bother them with advise on wich browser to use, but thats just me.
