Question In which file is default.gif called?
What is the process for getting a question answered here?
patience
Have I missed something?
yep the big link at top of this forum

Hi Cerberus,
The default.gif reference I am looking for is to
com_kunena/template/default_ex/images/english/emoticons/default.gif
I expected it to be listed in the icon array where I could change the reference to a png but it isn't. Or at least I can't see it.
thanks
so you mean the default TOPIC icon and to answer your question yes it is located in an array but that array is in com_kunena/template/default_ex/FLAT.PHP as its the topic array and not an emoticon array.
FYI - If in the unlikely event i have missed a question to me in a topic the best way to get my attention to it again is either a polite PM or simplely adding a reply with BUMP so that i check back to it again. Sadly i have a RL job too so things get missed, and getting upset does not make me want to jump right back on your issue and solve it for you.
NOTE - firebug for firefox is a wonderful tool that enable you the user to solve issues/change like this without have to ask and believe me its much nicer to be able to solve things like this yourself rather than have to ask others to do it ( been there done that, got told by sozzled to get firebug and hunt for it ) and lookat me now i can come here and help other to gain the skills i did from being part of this community.

I just wanted to clarify, as this was an issue I was having and couldn't solve. I use Firebug all the time, but I don't know it inside out. I had no problem determining where the image was located. I couldn't however, find the file where it was referenced, using Firebug. Maybe you can help me there too.
I needed to find the file in which the image was being called so I could change the file extension from gif to png. I found a reference to it in flat.php in the topic emoticon array but it still wasn't working once I changed it. All the other images worked once I changed their extensions. I then asked Techbot to check it out as I wasn't getting anywhere.
Turns out I was missing the second reference to it due to the pretty but distracting colours of Notepad++ "Find in Files" results...damn.
So the least I can do:
For anyone else wanting to change the file format of the icons there are two references in flat.php for default.gif
line 51
and line 213:
I am using Kunena 1.5.9 and my own template which was built up from default_ex.

Before we get to the technical aspects this case I'd like to make a couple of observations in response to your overall impressions.

At this stage in the evolution of Kunena many of us are investing long hours, day by day, in getting the next version of Kunena "ready" as a stable, production release. Although it is true that K 1.6 is being used on a couple of live websites elsewhere, the support arrangements in place there are quite different to the support arrangements available here. Every day, as we write in these forums, we try to keep a delicate balance between assisting users with the current production version of Kunena, continuing our work with the version of Kunena under development, keeping our users happy in all manner of ways and "having a life" ourselves. Sometimes, as a result of the many competing pressures we experience, people may encounter the occasional less-than-welcoming responses to their questions.I think the assumption that people post here without first trying to solve issues themselves sounds really uninviting.
Kunena.com has over 10,000 registered users (and many times that number who peruse these forums but do not register) and for many of them English is not their native language. For me, personally, I take care in trying to make sure that I understand the issues involved not necessarily for the purposes of solving the problems that users encounter but for in order to best place the right resources at the users' disposal. I am not an expert in all things Kunena and I don't really think anyone is. I am just a user with a little bit of time on his hands who is prepared to help. Sometimes I do and sometimes (I have to admit) I may make things worse. On balance, however, I think I do a reasonable job.
We do have a lot of users, we do encounter the same issues again and again and we sometimes do forget that, as far as our users are concerned, every case may be unique. But I think you would have to agree that there is an advantage, to everyone, if users take more responsibility in solving their problems than they sometimes expect us to take. Kunena is free and we don't get any financial gain for the time we volunteer to look after it. The only rewards we might expect are a simple "thank you" in reply and the time taken by users to write an honest appraisal of our work in the Joomla Extensions Directory .
Getting back to the specifics of the discussion topic, I'm pleased that left23 discovered where the default.gif image is referenced: there are two references in ../components/com_kunena/template/default_ex/flat.php and another reference in ../components/com_kunena/template/default_ex/thread.php. That, in effect, answers the question asked by techbot: "In which file is default.gif called?" Two files, three references.
Have we now resolved this case to everyone's complete satisfaction?
