Hi,

I am trying to configure my campaign website forum ( Science, Just Science or SJS) using Kunena in a secure fashion where I can allow members access to various areas. Specifically I have been trying to make it accessible based on group.

I divided the forum into 4 categories each with 2 forums, the general idea being that each pair of forums become available based on group permissions. To be honest I am not even sure Kunena supports custom groups which I think is what I need to achieve this but then I’m a Kunena noobie :)

The groups I had in mind (some of which exist by default) are:

  • Unregistered
  • Registered
  • Members (self-declared allies of SJS)
  • SJS (trusted SJS members)
  • Moderator
  • Admin
  • Banned

The forum categories I want (all moderated by Moderators & Administrators):
  • General (2 forums: "Introductions" & "Discussion")
Viewable by anyone (including unregistered), writable by all registered except "Banned"
  • Unregistered & Banned (read only)
  • Registered & above (read, write)

  • Community (2 forums: "Members" & "Debate")
  • Viewable only by registered, writable only by "Members" and above.
    • Unregistered & Banned (invisible)
    • Registered (read only)
    • Members & above (read, write)

  • SJS (2 forums: "Volunteers" & "Strategy")
  • Accessible (read/write) only by SJS group and above (can't even be seen by anyone else)
    • Members, banned & below (invisible)
    • SJS & above (read, write)

  • Administration (2 forums: "Admin" & "Archive")
  • Accessible only by Moderators and above (can't even be seen by anyone else)
    • Moderator & below (invisible)

Any ideas how I can set up such groups to create the forum security I need?

Click on the link for the Science, Just Science website :)

    Thanks

    Kyu

Everything else than "Registered <> Members" is easy to do by using Joomla groups and moderation feature.

    * Visitors, Registered and Admins already exist in Joomla
    * SJS, Moderators => Authors (in Joomla)
    * Banned: in Joomla, cannot log in
    * Moderators are assigned in Kunena user administration: just set them to be moderators without assigned categories
    * General Public Access Level: Everybody
    * Community Public Access Level: All registered
    * SJS Public Access Level: Author (with recursion flag enabled)
    * Administration Public Access Level: Leave unchecked

Thanks for that reply … my apologies for the late reply (I’ve been working)! Actually I thought I had but there’s nothing here so I’ll try again :)

Some of those groups I can't see ... in my Kunena forum administration I have:

    Everybody
    All Registered
    - Registered
    - Author
    - Editor
    - Publisher

I've tried to mark above in red which ones I don't have and I'm absolutely sure I'm asking the wrong questions (or the right questions the wrong way) but any guidance would be appreciated.
