Hi bobgen,

go to Joomla installer and uninstall Kunena 1.0.9. After that with Joomla installer install Kunena 1.5.3.
After installing of Kunena 1.5.3 everything should be OK.

I have the same question because I have a lots of posts in the Kunena Forum 1.08 and if I uninstall will that wipe all the messages?

I was planning on doing this on a backup of the site. But before I did this I thought I should ask.

Always Backup 1st with any upgrade.
The only thing you may need to check is if your current K1.09 template has been redone for K1.5.3 - if your using default_ex then your fine.
