Question How to get a proper timestamp on posts

Right now, all the posts on my forum are showing up with a timestamp like "posted by X-user 2 hours 29 minutes ago." I've looked through the admin backend and I don't see an option for changing this. Is there a way to get the forum to display a more accurate timestamp, such as "posted by X-user 01/27/10 2:28 EST?"

If you're suggesting that "01/27/10 2:28 EST" is more accurate than "2 hours 29 minutes ago" that's nonsense (because "01/27/10 2:28 EST" means nothing to me, just like "28/01/2010 07:06 AEDT" would mean nothing to you even though the latter format is actually 0 minutes ago as far as I am concerned). However, if you're asking how to change the format of the time from relative absolute, this question is asked a lot. Sometimes it's asked several times a day (see Change date format of posts ).

Hello,

I have do a hack for this kind of thing in some threads, but i'm don't remenber which thread.

Or just wait for K1.6.0 there will be an option for configured dates in configuration panel :).

I don't provide support by PM, because this can be useful for someone else.

I'm not suggesting that it's more accurate, I'm asking how to change it. EST was part of an example. Like your example above, I used the time and date it was in my area of the world. In a perfect world, the forum software would do all the required math and display the timestamp as according to the viewer's location, whether that's Eastern Standard Time or Australian Eastern Daylight Time.

However, if you're asking how to change the format of the time from relative absolute, this question is asked a lot. Sometimes it's asked several times a day (see Change date format of posts ).

Alright, I'll play the semantics game. I'm asking how to change the format for the display. I was on my way out the door to work when I made the above post, but I didn't do it without searching around first. I found the Solutions and Tutorials - Common Questions post and followed it to the solution it offered, but that didn't work. If the only reliable solution is to wait for v1.6, that's fine, but when I try the solution that's posted in what is for all intents and purposes the FAQ thread and it doesn't work, I don't assume the option isn't yet available and shouldn't ask about it because I might hit somebody's sore spot, I assume I did something wrong and should therefore ask about it.

I'll agree that Kunena's date formats vary a lot, they're inconsistent and awkward to change, but I've been able to get something close to what I want by tweaking the language file. Have a look at my demo site ( demo.enduring.com.au ). Admittedly, I haven't timestamped my posts with a timezone indicator, but that's just a small matter of further customisation if you want to go into that. I am happy to show further details if you want, but the basics are already covered in How to display post date instead of "XXX days ago"?

I agree, the relative time format is a bit clumsy and strange-looking to many users who would prefer to see an absolute time instead. I agree with you that it would be more desirable to see timestamps expressed according to the users preferred locale setting but that hasn't made it into the Kunena design phase yet. Give it time and vote for it. ;)

It may have appeared captious of me, but your original post did say

Is there a way to get the forum to display a more accurate timestamp

which is why I drew the distinction between accuracy and format. :P When we're dealing with an international forum, and one in which there are many non-English writers, it's important that we understand one another and sometimes what you mean in your language may have a totally unexpected meaning to someone else in theirs.

Fair enough. I worded that poorly and for that I apologize.
