Hm managed to solve this by resetting the ownership of all files
By uploading the files, the ownership of all files was changed to 'apache' for some weird reason
Uploading files will always cause files to be owned by apache, but Kunena should handle that and change it to something different. If it does not work, we need to find out why.
Because of the 30 second time out I turned FTP off in my joomla configuration, without it I could install Kunena in the joomla installer.
But then all files were owned by 'apache' after uploading, while all other files are owned by my user of the hosting account, that's why I couldn't upload to any kunena directory or change a file.
So I had to manually reset the ownership of the files in the file manager in my hosting configuration
