hey

Can any one help me understand use of Connections? Also, forum indicates whenever someone is online? What is advantage of showing someone online? Can we chat with the person?

Is there any plug-in by which we can enable individual chats among online members?

Awaiting response

Connections are like your friends list ...

There are a few Joomla plugins that enable chats on sites, some are capable of individual chats some are only group chats others are just glorified shoutboxes. I use tufats FlashChat on my site gives me group and individual chats with other users in chat through PM Chat Windows.

Advantage on most sites for showing online is friends know its a good time to contact you and get a response. If you use something like UddeIM that has instant notification if they see you online they might send you a hey meet me in the chat room message or a hey I was wondering ...

On the other hand if they don't see their friends online they are less likely to send spur of the moment contacts and go to other sites that allow instead of sticking around your site.

Hope that answers your questions a bit ;)

I prefer FlashChat www.tufat.com/s_flash_chat_chatroom.htm integrates with Joomla free trial $5 to buy full license for it and its quite powerful. FC allows for some common IRC commands and has rooms that you can set and users can create there own private rooms if you allow it as well as private chat with each other. As far as I know there aren't any Kunena specific chats.

You would use the Joomla installer to for any of the chat systems available from the Joomla Extension Directory , Flashchat is a little different but is documented well at tufat, you basically upload the chat folder to your web root and use the FC installer telling it to integrate with Joomla then use the wrapper menu item to add the chat room to your site.

I have FC on gWorldz if you want to get a look at it and see if you like it, I've been happy with it for 4+ years and used it on several sites of different community sizes. To be honest I hope to outgrow it with gW and move toward my own IM client, FC can only handle an active chat user base of around 50-100 (is what I'm told ???) so large active communities might need a different system.

PS I wasn't actually online I was running a Macro to refresh my browser to check email and forums so I could see if there was anything I needed to post about this morning ;)
