Hi -

I tried to add a video from Blip.TV by choosing Flash and Flashvars - producing a BBcode like this:

But only the code shows up. Am I adding the Blip.TV video the right way?

Also, why has Blip.TV not been added to the list of Providers and how can it be added?

Finnally, I have tried to add video located on my local server, by removing the "//" in the kunena.parser.php file, for the flas and flashvars definitions. I see both Flash and Flashvars showing up in the Providers list when trying to add a video, but all I get is the code showing up.

Anyone has any advice on how to make this work, as we are collaborating on a big project in need of this to work...:)

I have attached my modded kunena.parser.php fil:

First of all, I want you to clearly understand that I am, foremost, just a user - like you! I perform some housekeeping duties here at Kunena.com but I am not a developer.

I don' know why blip.tv was never added to the list of video providers. I don't know anything about blip.tv and, for that matter, I don't know anything about a lot of the video providers that are included in the video embedding function of Kunena.

I am aware that the Kunena developers have deliberately disabled the means to include Flash. This is a bit of a disappointment to me, too, because I can no longer use Flash animations that I designed and built myself either.

I am also aware that the video tag (without provider information) also does not work. This is also another disappointment to me because it means that I cannot display videos that I host at my websites. See Video in K1.6 .

As far as the urgency of your request is concerned, I cannot help you personally. If you have a major project in hand that require immediate support, it would seem reasonable that you should be engaging a contractor to do this work for you ... would it not? Are you prepared to offer some financial remuneration for this work? I'm sure that someone can come to some mutually agreed arrangement with you.

Thanks for your kind reply. I would like to ask a developer to do this, but we are a a non-profit start-up with no funds and I have already spent most of my own savings helping this project to get going online. So, I hope one of the experts here can help me out :)

Best,
Kaliya

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I truly believe the Kunena team should leave this as an option up to admins. Ship it disabled by default "to protect the unknowning home user" or whatever, but allow a configuration where people like the many who keep posting about it in here can switch it on and allow flash, like we want, on our forums. Maybe a petition would help this?? I had a thread going before, for what it's worth, where someone pointed me to the changes in the code where they disabled flash, but I tried coping the 'original' (meaning, when it was allowed) contents, but never got it working. Maybe you would have better luck.. Maybe someone will, and will share it with us if a configuration option will not be added.

Thanks for those observations, Rooster. :)

I would like to add one comment to the general discussion about allowing the end-user the right to accept (or not) a tolerable amount of risk. What concerns me, above all, is the extent to which the Kunena project facilitates the spread of security problems by allowing the risk to exist at all. This has unfortunately occurred with other Joomla extensions and I would not like to see it happen here.

We know that there are plenty of examples of Joomla software, developed by well-meaning people, that was exploited in ways that the developers had not intended. Here is a partial list of some of that products that have been identified as "vulnerable extensions" that resulted in many of them being "pulled" from the Joomla Extensions Directory because the the Joomla community did not feel that the risks were acceptable: docs.joomla.org/Vulnerable_Extensions_List

The Kunena project takes seriously the possibility that Kunena may have the potential for anyone to cause problems to others. Just recently we have seen a former, reputable developer of web-based discussion forum taken down by these misadventures. I am sure that we would not like to see this repeated with Kunena.

I agree that the inability to display all forms of video in the Kunena forum is a nuisance. There needs to be a way of permitting the legitimate use of video while, at the same time, preventing the illegitimate use of it.

But in the end, it should be up to the admin/owner what he considers tolerable, acceptable and worth-while risk. I understand your desire to not be blacklisted or delisted, but as long as your software is sent with said feature disabled, I don't see how you could be found at fault.

I get heat for this on almost a daily basis, members of my site asking if (you guys) have reenabled flash, and pointing out several other high-profile forum packages that have no problem with allowing flash. I'm not likely to switch; I'm used the the way fb functioned just as Kunena now, and there are several features I appreciate and feel this package works more fluidly than some others I've tried in the past. I just wish you would leave it up to the people using it to determine the amount of security. I mean, if we followed this belief, would there even be a Joomla? After all, Joomla itself allow several packages to run that could allow malicious activity, yet.. It allows the user to decide whether they want to or not. There are even several things in the core of Joomla itself that are 'user adjustable', to tweak between ease of use and security. All I'm asking is Kunena allow the same option.
