Just like the title says its causing duplicate meta descriptions & tags.

The article will have the exact same title, keywords & description as the forum topic. Would be better if kunena generated new descriptions & keywords for the forum thread so its more seo friendly.

yes, indeed. It goes in line with also duplicating content which is reducing your page rank in google, see forum/178-kunena-discuss-p/58405-discuss-plg-need-link-to-articles-only

I saw that the first discuss post contains
Code:
[article]id[/article]
, so there must be somewhere in the kunena code where this is interpreted and where then the meta tags can be changed.

First off:

Several good ideas here on how to improve the plugin and the way it creates new topics. Right now the intro text of the article is shown and that will be the default going forward - but we can include multiple options.

As for your SEO concerns: You surely want to optimize to get better and better. However none of that content or meta tags will bring your search ranking down. It is totally fine to quote other content, as long as it is not overused and a high percentage of your site. The quote button of the forum will produce more duplicate content that the discuss plugin will every do (on most decently frequented boards at least).

Kunena is already way more optimized for SEO than many of you might realize. Meta tags are a minor input into search engines indexing these days. You primarily want it to be clean so that search results create meaningful listings that show the user what to expect on that page.
For example clean unique URLs are much more important for your sites efficient indexing. Duplicate URLs to the same content are what kills your search coverage. Since the early days of Kunena we have invested heavily to optimize for that. Every page of a thread has one and only one URL that we generate for it, not like many other forums that can have 10 or more URLs to a single page. We even do permanent redirects should traffic or bots come in with incorrect URL formats.

Again great input - we take all the help we can get, so if you want to contribute some optimized code, all the power to you - but please refrain from incorrect statements like SEO is not important to us. You really need to dig deep to understand most of the SEO work we have invested in. If you run a Kunena forum, and the rest of your site is clean, you will get the best possible search ranking based on your page rank aka incoming site links.

We love stars on the Joomla Extension Directory . :-)

Oh, I think that you guys don't do a fantastic job when it comes to SEO, all I was saying that now when you guys are working so hard on 1.6 I doubted that the discuss plugins SEO would be at the top of the list for things to be improved.

All my articles end up in the forums via the discuss bot so that would mean 100% duplicated content. I have 10 000+ articles on one of my sites so that would be considered as overuse of dupe content and bad for SEO I think ??
