Question new topic does not show

Anyone can tell me why new topic does not show if the category has another category in it?
For example you have category A and you have category 1 and category 2 in category A. New topic does not show in any of them like it does when you have a category with nothing in it.

Just to be sure we're discussing the same thing, I think you're talking about the "new" indicator for sub-categories, is that correct?

Let's say you have a category A with two sub-categories 1 and 2 and someone posts a new message in sub-category 1 (or 2, it doesn't matter). If you look at the Recent Topics view you will see the that the topic (in sub-category 1) will show a NEW indicator. So that part of things works, yes?

But if you look at the Index view, the category icon for category A may not show "green" but the sub-category icon for sub-category 1 will show "green", yes?

However, if you have a sub-sub-category below that then, no, you won't see the "green'" icon. This is a long-standing issue - for some people it's a problem - if they have a deeply-nested category structure. In other words, if you have a flat structure, it's not so much a problem.

If I have correctly interpreted your question, I suggest that you look at the topic Unread forums appear dont appear unread . There isn't a good answer, yet, for this issue but please let us know if this is the issue that you are trying to describe.

Thanks for the reply.
I think I didn't make myself clear.

For example:

I have a category named Movies. I divided that category with 2 new categories called Dvds and Blurays.
So I go to the forum as a registered user, to the category Dvds and want to start a new topic. The new topic button and subscribe button are not there. The same with category Blurays.

If I make a category name Movies with no categories in it, I can go to it and start a new topic or subscribe because the buttons are there.

I can use an extra menu to always display the button new topic as a module anywhere on the site but when you for example go to the category Dvds and start a new topic, you have to choose the category from a drop down list box as its not automatically done as its supposed to do. So its useless to go to the category where you want to post as you have to choose that category again.

Sorry for being long, just tried to make it clear.

Categories can also be container for sub-Categories (also known as "child boards" but they never lose their function as containers for message topics

You can only write posts into categories or sub-categories (also known as "child boards") within categories

I think this is much clearer than what I wrote previously. So the question is why cannot I create a new topic or post to a category or sub-category (child board)?

Why does it need to be a category without subs for me to be able to create a new topic or post?

They are not locked.

I found the problem. I am using a tree menu and made links of categories and links of the sub categories directly to the forum from it. Seems if the sub categories are published, new topic does not show. If I unpublish the sub categories of the menu, I enter from the menu category links and then I enter the sub categories from there and new topic, subscribe buttons show.

The menu item link must point to kunena_forum/category and not to kunena_forum/category_index to show those buttons. But that's impossible for sub categories.

It would have been nice to be able to enter directly into sub categories from the tree menu. There may be a solution or something.

Yes, it's quite possible to do this. You need to properly setup your Joomla menu that takes people directly to those categories.

Setting up a Joomla menu properly is a little bit tricky. There is a Wiki article that explains the process: Customised menus .

One example of a customised menu is the Playground feature here at this website.

For each menu item, use the menu type = Kunena - Index and the Parent ID of that item to the sub-category you want to go to.
