Is your question
    (a) how do you convert PNG images to GIF images; or
    (b) can you use GIF images as category images (the answer is
yes, by the way); or
(c) can you use (and is it a good idea to use) animated GIF images as category images?See Options for Customizing Subforums? for information that may help with the question (b) that I think you're really asking.

... but ... are you aware of the risks involved in using a template that was developed for K 1.5.3?

The tutorial provides information that, if you are using the default_ex template - that allows .GIF images for categories - you have to create three files for each category and they all have to be of filetype .GIF. If the template you're using relies on .PNG files instead, well, you'll have to change it to look for .GIF files.

There's a simple and reliable solution: use the default_ex template and you don't have to change any source code. If the colours of the default_ex template don't suit your website, then change the CSS file.

The alternative is to modify the [obsolete] template PHP files that use PNG files for category images (probably it's just one file called ../components/com_kunena/template/<your-template-folder>/listcat.php), by changing the file name references I gave in my "tutorial". That's for you to do.

Yours is another demonstration of why it is important to only use up-to-date templates from reliable sources and to stay clear of templates that have not kept pace with all the version changes that have occurred in Kunena. It was to overcome the problems that your case demonstrates that that guided the development of K 1.6 to remove the co-dependency between file structure, PHP code and CSS.

In the meantime, if your installation of Kunena relies upon third-party developed templates, and they impose restrictions on your ability to upgrade or your ability to perform normal operations, then you need to weigh up the advantages of overcoming those limitations yourself (or with the help of the person who designed those limitations) or abandon the idea and use the standard features of Kunena that don't have those limitations (but may have other limitations for you).
