Question I have a phpbb3 3.9 forum that i want to migrate to kunena 1.7

I have a phpbb3 3.9 forum that i want to migrate to kunena 1.7. After downloading the Kunena component installer and the forum importer component, i read in the readme file that the importer component requires joomla 1.5. But I already have an existing joomla 1.7 site. Here are my questions.
Please advise me of the correct procedure or process in importing. I already read the wiki but I am still not sure how to go about it.
1. Should I install Kunena 1.7 first and then the importer component? Which should be done first?
2. Should I install Joomla 1.5 first to meet the requirement of the readme file in the importer component and then do the required upgrades of Joomla and Kunena to the latest releases? (If so, that would be tiresome.)
Any advice me for a newbie like me groping in the dark will be highly appreciated. Sorry if i post in the wrong thread. Thanks.

I don't provide support by PM, because this can be useful for someone else.

Hello,
You need to install Joomla! 1.5.24 with the kunena migrator with Kunena 1.7.0, then you can do the import process. After, you need to migrate data to Joomla! 1.7.1 with jupgrade

Thanks for the reply. Well, I downloaded the latest installer both for Kunena and the importer.
I installed Kunena first, was notified to either remove or upgrade the existing Kunena 1.6 that most probably came with the JA Social template from Joomlart.
Since I cannot choose to upgrade (no button for the "upgrade"), I just chose removed. Then got notified that it was removed.
I uploaded the installer again and this second time was left with only one choice, install Kunena 1.6. So I did. It spewed a notice that I can't have "forum" for Kunena because I have a folder in my root named so (it is for the phpbb3 forum). And there's another notice, I'm not sure if installation failed or what.
Then I checked on the component menu and found Kunena there. When I clicked on it, there was a display that the installation is on going. (In the earlier window in the Extension Manager, i thought the installation failed.) After a minute of waiting without any progress indicator, i just clicked on "Next" and there was a notice that Kunena 1.6 was installed.

Next, I renamed the phpbb3 folder in my root from "forum" to "phpbb3" and made a few basic changes to the phpbb3 forum - turned off e-mails, turned it offline, disabled registration, and change the directory from /forum to /phpbb3.
Then I made a menu for the Kunena forum on the Main Menu with alias of "forum" and it was so.
From that link, I moved to the new kunena forum and i saw the default frontpage. Cool.
Then I uploaded the Importer. The phpbb3 folder was auto-detected. I just accepted all the default choices and clicked Truncate. There was a notice of some removals. I then clicked Import and the importer crunched. It set some emails, etc with a yellow backgroun. Then lo and behold, it announced the import was complet and my phpbb3 sections, categories and posts were all imported.
So i now have Joomla 1.7.2 with Kunena 1.6.
Haven't checked the imported users and ID's though. I'll be back to report.

Checked a bit deep and here are what I've found out so far.
1. My Kunena is 1.7, not 1.6 as earlier posted. I don't know how it happened though.
2. User IDs are kept.
3. Section and Category IDs too are carried over even the order of how it appears.
4. More importantly, who-posted-what are kept intact together with the posting date and time.
5. The admins and moderators in phpbb3 retains somewhat their "color-coding" but i'm not sure yet about their permissions.
6. The number of views from phpbb3 were not carried over, all back to "0" in Kunena.
7. I'm not sure about the images and avatars because I lost them in my previous host.
So far, so good. More than good, it's a miracle (to my limited mind). Great job, Kunena Team!

Actually importer works also in J1.7, but it sends emails to all users.
Good to have reports like this; it was one of the hardest tasks to get user import right. Avatars and attachments should be imported as well. Permissions aren't imported.
